"Taken in 1967 by Rocco Morabito, this photo called “The Kiss of Life” shows a utility worker named J.D. Thompson giving mouth-to-mouth to co-worker Randall G. Champion after he went unconscious following contact with a low voltage line. They had been performing routine maintenance when Champion brushed one of the low voltage lines at the very top of the utility pole. His safety harness prevented a fall, and Thompson, who had been ascending below him, quickly reached him and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He was unable to perform CPR given the circumstances, but continued breathing into Champion’s lungs until he felt a slight pulse, then unbuckled his harness and descended with him on his shoulder. Thompson and another worker administered CPR on the ground, and Champion was moderately revived by the time paramedics arrived, eventually making a full recovery.

What’s even more incredible is Champion not only survived this thanks to Thompson, but he lived an extra 35 years. He died in 2002 at 64 years old. Thompson is still alive today.

Rocco Morabito was driving on West 26th Street in July 1967 on another assignment when he saw Champion dangling from the pole. He called an ambulance and grabbed his camera. “I passed these men working and went on to my assignment”, says Morabito. “I took eight pictures at the strike. I thought I’d go back and see if I could rind another picture”. But when Morabito gets back to the linemen, “I heard screaming. I looked up and I saw this man hanging down. Oh my God. I didn’t know what to do. I took a picture right quick. J.D. Thompson was running toward the pole. I went to my car and called an ambulance. I got back to the pole and J.D. was breathing into Champion. I backed off, way off until I hit a house and I couldn’t go any farther. I took another picture. Then I heard Thompson shouting down: He’s breathing!”.

"Prise en 1967 par Rocco Morabito, cette photo qui est appelée "le baiser de la vie" montre un ouvrier nommé J.D. Thompson faire du bouche à bouche à son collègue Randall G. Champion après qu'il ait été retrouvé inconscient car il avait eu un contact avec une ligne à basse tension. Ils effectuaient un entretient de routine lorsque Champion toucha la ligne tout en haut du poteau, son harnet de sécurité lui a évité la chute, et Thompson, qui était monté en dessous de lui, l'a rapidement rejoint et a Il a été incapable d'effectuer la réanimation cardiorespiratoire dans ces circonstances, mais il a continué à respirer dans les poumons de Champion jusqu'à ce qu'il ressente un léger pouls, puis il ouvra son harnais et il descendit avec Champion sur son épaule. Thompson et un autre collègue ont fait un massage cardiaque au sol, et CHampion repris ses esprits en partie en attendant les secours, il a éventuellement repris tout ses esprits.

Ce qui est encore plus incroyable c'est que CHampion n'a pas seulement survécu gràce à Thompson, il a continué à vivre pendant 35ans. Il est mort en 2002 à l'age de 64ans. Thompson est toujours en vie.

Rocco Morabito (le photographe) conduisait sur la 26ème rue en ce mois de Juillet 1967 dans un autre but quand il a vu Champion se balancer accroché au poteau. Il a appelé une ambulance et attrapé son appareil photo. "je suis passé à coté de ces hommes en train de travailler et je suis allé sur le lieu de ma mission" dit Morabito. "J'ai pris 8 photos de la grève. J'ai pensé que j'allais rentrer et voir si je pourrais reprendre une nouvelle photo". Mais quand Morabito revient là où il a vu ces hommes travailler "j'ai entendu criller, j'ai levé les yeux et j'ai vu cet homme se balancer dans le vide. Oh mon Dieu. Je ne savais pas quoi faire. J'ai pris une photo très rapidement. J.D. Thompson courrait en direction du poteau. Je suis allé à ma voiture et j'ai appelé une ambulance. Je suis revenu au pied du poteau et J.D. faisait du bouche à bouche à Champion. J'ai réculé, jusqu'à ce que je touche une maison et je ne pouvais pas aller plus loin. J'ai pris une autre photo. Ensuite j'ai entendu Thompson crier "il respire"
